Welcome to The Road to Six Figures Challenge Week 15!
The Six Figures Challenge is a challenge created by entrepreneur, TraVal Shanklin, to document his journey of earning six figures from scratch through business ownership.
No Free Work
Doing work for my fellow Blacks for free is good at certain times. I do work for free only when I am trying to break into a certain market.
As an African-American we are taught to depend on the government, Whites, and everyone else for our necessities. When someone tries to break free from being dependent, they are ridiculed not only by other races, but by their own people.
I believe doing work for free should be a tactic used only when someone is just starting out and needs customer testimonials and reviews. Other than that, free work is a terrible idea. It buys in to the system that causes Blacks to continue to think from a dependent standpoint. The dependent standpoint is when you think the only way you can get ahead is when you are dependent on someone else. As long as we are depending on White supremacy for our survival, we can never get ahead.
Black people are brainwashed when thinking they should get a hand out. It’s funny that you ask your fellow Black businessmen and women to do something for free and even expect them to do so. On the other hand, you wouldn’t even think to ask a White business to do the same thing.
Just because the owner is Black, does not mean the Business is sub-par or not up to the task. This is a stereotype and is hurting the Black businesses that are providing excellent customer service and excellent products/services.
For me, there are times where I do work at a discount for certain promotions and offerings. However, usually I’m charging exactly what I’m worth. This is one of the reasons why I chose to start a business in the first place. I’m not going to undercut myself like what happens at a job, but will charge exactly what I am worth.
