Are You a Finisher?

finisher

It’s not about how you start, it’s about how you finish. Are you a finisher?

Unless you have been hiding under a rock these past couple of days, you probably heard or watched Usain Bolt win the Men’s 100M last night. I watched the semi-final heat Bolt ran in and his performance was truly amazing. These are the fastest men in the world and Bolt easily won the race, smiling.

He is known to be slow off the block, but makes up for it by being an excellent finisher. In the finals, Bolt showed the world that how you finish is more important than how you start.

The U.S. runner, Justin Gatlin, eased through his semi-final heat pretty comfortably. He is known to be quicker then Bolt off the block. However, he struggles in the last 50M where Bolt shines. The only way for him to win was to get out off the block quick enough to maintain the lead over Bolt.

In the finals, Gatlin got out of the block quick and I thought he had a big enough lead to beat Bolt. I was wrong. In the last 50M, Bolt came from behind and walked Gatlin to win 1st place, cementing his legacy in the Men’s 100M.

Starter vs. Finisher

Looking back on my life, I can see where I have went wrong. Naturally, I get bored quickly so I have the tendency to start but not finish. Also, when I have started a project I usually find a new shiny project that catches my attention. The time I should be spending on my first project is now trimmed to make room for the other project. This process continues until I spread myself too thin and lose motivation.

Having the focus and motivation to see something through is very important. Now, I break down a project or goal into actionable steps I can take daily to track my progress. The process of completing daily milestones and goals keeps me motivated to keep working.

When it comes to life in general, everyone has faced adversity and struggles. You can always get a better life for yourself. The question is: Do you want it bad enough? Many people have dreams and goals, but either never work towards them or give up too quickly. Right before they are about to experience a breakthrough, they quit.

Some of you may have had rough starts in life, but you should never think that your life can never get better. Once your mindset and habits change, your life will slowly begin to change. Focus on getting a mindset of positivity, taking advantage of the present opportunities while working towards the life you want to live. Replicate the habits of self-made millionaires, they think and act differently than regular people.
